With spirited protesters and helmeted deputies on horseback, the night of April 3 in Guadalupe was like some historical reenactment, albeit in miniature, of a late-'60s anti-war melee. You know, the kind chronicled by Norman Mailer in one of his seminal "non-fiction novels" of the era, such as Miami and the Siege of Chicago or The Armies of the Night.
Granted, no one will ever mistake Guadalupe, a dusty, postage-stamp-size municipality of about 5,500 people for Chicago, Miami, or D.C. And there were only four horsemen that evening, bolstered, though they were, by about 40 more deputies from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

Obama to meet with Mexico's Calderon on Monday

WASHINGTON/MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – U.S. President-elect Barack Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon will meet on Monday for talks likely to address tough issues like Mexico's drug war and the NAFTA trade agreement.

Many in Mexico see Obama's election as a chance to restore good relations after Bush focused on the Middle East and failed to deliver a promised accord with Mexico on immigration.

"Mexico has been seeking a migration accord for years that would give legal status to the millions of Mexicans living illegally in the country," Espinosa said.

Border official accused of hiring illegal workers

BOSTON – A top Homeland Security official in Boston was accused Friday of repeatedly hiring illegal immigrants to clean her home, even warning one not to leave the country "'cause once you leave, you will never be back."

Lorraine Henderson, the regional director of Homeland Security, Customs, and Border Protection, was arrested Friday at her home in Salem. She was charged with harboring an illegal alien and ordered released on $25,000 unsecured bond during an initial appearance in federal court. She was expected to appear in federal court in Boston later Friday on a charge of harboring an illegal alien.

Immigration steered Latinos to Obama

Immigration agents nab 300 in factory swoop

PHOENIX (Reuters) - U.S. immigration agents arrested about 300 workers at a South Carolina poultry plant on Tuesday, the latest in a series of workplace raids targeting illegal immigrants and employers across the United States.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) said federal agents arrested the workers at the Columbia Farms poultry processing plant in Greenville.

The nationalities of those arrested were not immediately clear.

Opponents Sue to Stop Texas City's Immigration Law

Opponents of a Dallas suburb's latest effort to force out illegal immigrants filed a lawsuit Wednesday seeking to stop a city ban on apartment and home rentals to tenants who can't prove they are legally in the country.

The filing in federal court seeks to prevent Farmers Branch from requiring prospective renters to obtain a license from the city. Information from the license application would be forwarded to the federal government for verification of a tenant's legal immigration status.

E-Verify, is it accurate?

Critics have found quite a bit not to like. They note that a study commissioned by DHS itself found that for every thousand names put into the system, 58 come back as tentative nonconfirmation. Of those, about five people successfully contest the finding that they're not legally eligible to work in the US. DHS officials and advocates like Mr. Dane believe that means the other 53 applicants are probably illegal and the system is discouraging them as it should. But critics note that there's no way to know if those 53 were in the US illegally. The study commissioned by DHS also found that a substantial number of employers did not follow the E-Verify rules designed to protect citizens.
"We really don't know what the situation is with that 5.3 percent [who don't contest their tentative nonconfirmations]," says Jim Harper, director of information policy studies at the Cato Institute in Washington.
He did an analysis using the same Social Security database that E-Verify uses. The government acknowledges that the database has an error rate of 4.1. That means that about 17 million people's names may not be exactly correct or there was an error when the information, like date of birth, was entered. Though they are here legally, those residents would come back as "tentative non-confirmations."
"As a matter of simple math, that means that if E-Verify were to go national, on the first day 1 in 25 legal new hires would be bounced out of the system and asked to go down to the Social Security office and straighten out the problem," he says.

Is E-Verify the answer to stop illegal immigration, or is it only harming U.S. citizen’s employment because of its lack of accuracy?
